State of Play - PlayStation’s Summer Showcase

It is an exciting month for games as with every year around this time there are several game showcases where we will see announcements of new upcoming games and learn more about upcoming games that we currently already know about. The cinematic trailers get us excited for the games but the gameplay is what we really want to see.

To kick it off this year it is the State of Play which is Play’s summer showcase where we got to see quite a few upcoming games later this year and also into 2025. I will discuss below the games which I found most interesting.

Monster Hunter Wilds - 2025

This game looks super cool, if you like Monster Hunter World then I am sure you will like the look of this game. In the trailer we see monster moving in pack, plus callable mounts and a variety of weapons including guns.

God of War Ragnarok on PC - 19th September 2024

The PC port is being done the same team that did God of War PC port so if you liked that port than this you will likely like this port as well. We will get unlocked frame rates, frame generations, ultrawide support and the DLC included which sounds like all good things however I would have liked to see some graphical upgrades.

Astro Bot - 6th Sep 2024

I love playing the first Astro Bot game ASTRO’s Playroom with my son and I think that he would really like to play this one as well. In the trailer we see new power up suits, upgrade items which you use in some levels, big boss battles and lots of easter eggs. This is a fully fledged game and will not be free unlike the first one but it seems like it will be a lot of fun and worth checking out.

Dynasty Warriors Origins - 2025

You are either into dynasty warriors or not. I am someone that is even though I have no idea what I am doing half the time apart from trying to pick the fanciest weapon and jump pummelling the hordes of enemies.

There were also a bunch of other games shown - check out the rest of games list below with trailer links. Watch the full showcase here.

Marvel Rivals - PS5 - July 2024 Closed Beta

Concord - PS5 and PC - August 23rd 2024

Silent Hill 2 - PS5 - 8th Oct 2024

Until Dawn - PS4 and PC - Fall 2024

Path of Exile 2 - PS5- Early Access Late 2024

Infinity Nikki - test in Q1 2025

Ballad of Antara - 2025

Where Wind Meets - in development for PS5

Skydance’s Behemoth - PSVR2

Alien Rogue Incursion - PSVR2 - Holiday 2024

Now while it was cool to see these games we do have to discuss the controversy around God of War Ragnarok and Until Dawn on PC which will both require PSN accounts to play. Why is that controversial you may ask? Well that is because the previous single player PlayStation ports did not require PSN access. One of the biggest problems with needing to have a PSN account to play is that you can only sign up for a PSN account in 69 countries which means that there are a lot of countries which will not even be able to purchase these games. Previously in edition 11 of the newsletter we reported that Helldivers 2 did not require a PSN account and then did (which then they reversed the decision on for this game). Also in edition 12 we reported that Ghost of Tsushima did require a PSN account. Helldivers 2 is a multiplayer game and Ghost of Tsushima has a multiplayer aspect to it, therefore it was thought that this was only required for multiplayer games however that it not the case. It is unclear as to the real reason why Sony is doing it but it has been speculated that it is either grow their PSN account numbers and possibly entice players to move to the PlayStation ecosystem - Sony have said it is for the safety of players and their data however for many that is hard to believe as Sony has been hacked previously.

TLDR News

ASUS’s RMA process in USA seems to be really bad; I recommend watching this video from Gamers Nexus for their experience and of others who have contacted them. ASUS did respond with and you can check out their response here. If you are looking to buy an ASUS product then it is worth checking out these videos because you might be adding some risk on the product than you might have not have thought about initially. Also I would recommend trying to buy a product of their through a retailer who covers you if there is an issue with it such as Best Buy in the US and John Lewis in the UK.

Looks like we are getting two more remakes from Capcom in the Resident Evil Franchise. Reportedly it will Resident Evil CODE: Veronica and Resident Evil Zero which are currently getting remakes. More details here.

All development on Cyberpunk 2077 has ended and the next Witcher game coming from CDPR looks to be in full production. More details here.

Earlier this month Strauss Zelnick insisted that Intercept Games and Roll7 had not been closed in an interview with IGN. However the senior design manager Quinn Duffy for Kerbal Space Program 2 posting on Linkedin saying “The team at Intercept Games will be laid off as of June 28th”. Now it turns out that that IGN have learnt that not only are the closure of these studio happening very soon but also that it is part of a larger plan by Take-Two to either sell off or shut down it’s indie label, Private Division. Read more about it here.

Another week and another handheld has been teased for release. This time Zotac has teased a PC gaming handheld with a 7inch AMOLED screen. They say it has quality controls and top-end specs with full details likely coming with the unveiling at COMPUTEX next week.

Call of Duty Black Ops 6 is coming to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, and Xbox Game Pass for Console members on day one (not much of a surprise here). There will be a Black Ops 6 direct airing on June 9th following the Xbox Games Showcase where we will find out more about the game. Watch the live action reveal trailer here.

YouTube launches playable gaming platform with games like Angry Birds Showdown, Cut the rope and many more. Honestly not sure who this is for- while I watch people play games on YouTube but not a place I got to play games - You can check out the full list of games and play them here.

Zenless Zone Zero has a July 4th release date on Android, iOS, PC and PS5 from the miHoYo who developed Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. The game is an action-RPG set in an Urban fantasy post-apocalyptic city. Pre-register for the game here.

Cool Stuff

If you are into game design or want to get into game design then this article is worth a read. It goes through how to design a great tutorial. It goes through things like spacing, pacing, discovery, testing and more. It is really interesting to read about what works for some games won’t work for others. Read the article here.

An unofficial PC port for The Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask was released online. This port is different from the port that we mentioned in 13th Edition of the newsletter that was made through a modding tool called N64Recomp. This port is by Harbour Masters who are the same team that created the Ocarina of Time PC port in 2022. This port includes higher frame rates, free camera, widescreen resolutions and more. I have yet to play either of these games yet as I only recently got into Zelda games and it is pretty expensive to buy and set up correctly older consoles with these games to play as originally intended so I think this might be one of the best way for someone to go back play or replay these games as you will only need a legal copy of the game and a PC. With that legal copy of the game that you own you can dump the files and play the game using the tutorial on their website.
