Day of the Devs Showcase and Future Games Show: Summer Showcase 2024 - Newsletter #19

Welcome to the Nineteenth Edition of the Everglow Games Newsletter, We here want to provide you a place where you can view all the most interesting news, articles and videos related to gaming of the week. We also provide a view of games showcases and upcoming game releases of the week. This is your one stop shop for all things gaming.

I think I play more indie games these days than I have ever done in the past and that is because there are so many interesting and good indie games out, so in these recent showcases I always love to see the upcoming indie games that could be potential bangers. Below I go through my picks from the Day of the Devs show and also the Future Games Show it should be noted that there were too many in the show for me to discuss them all. To see all the games you can watch the full Day of the Devs showcase here and the full Future Games Show here.

UFO 50 - 18th September 2024

This is super interesting concept - this is collection of 50 games which were designed for a fictional games console by a fictional games developer called UFOsoft who developed games from 1982 to 1990. Some games are small arcade games and some are quite large. Check out the trailer here.

Screenbound

Another super cool concept of a game where you are playing in 2D and 3D game at the same time. So you see the 2D version on a device that looks like a Gameboy and you see the 3D world around the rest of the screen. You have to pay attention to both as the enemies are in only in 2D world and the most of the puzzle elements are in the 3D world. Check out the trailer here.

Zoochosis

In this game you are zookeeper but there is some very strange stuff going in the zoo, in the trailer we see mutated animals (some of which look really freaky). I assume you will find out what is going on and hopefully save the animals. Watch the trailer here.

Nobody Wants to Die - 17th July 2024

This game is based in a Cyberpunk neo noir world. In the trailer shown they also showcased the music which matches up really well with the world we got a glimpse of. You play a detective and you take a job in which solve a mystery, the cool part is you can manipulate time which allows you to see evidence you would not have otherwise seen. Watch the trailer here.

Detective Dotson - Q4 2024

Based on the trailer shown it looks like the game is detective game where you solve crimes. We also saw a pixelated 2.5D world based in India and being Indian myself this interests me as we do not see many games set in India so that is what has peaked my interest. Watch the trailer here.

DREDGE - The Iron Rig DLC - 15th August

I have played several hours of Dredge recently and while I have yet to complete it, I do really enjoy playing. So more Dredge is always welcome. If you don’t know what Dredge is then it is simply a fishing game where you take your boat to catch and sell fish in which there is a day night cycle and you can catch different fish in the night and day; however there are some pretty nasty monsters out to get you when fishing at night. Watch the DLC announcement trailer here.

Eriksholm The Stolen Dream - 2025

In the trailer we see what looks like a stealth game with a top down view, I do get the vibe of commandos games but instead of a war setting, this game is set in the city of Eriksholm (a fictional English city). This one looks interesting to me as I have enjoyed isometric games in the past, so I will likely try this one out. Watch the trailer here.

Eternal Strands

Eternal strands is a fantasy action RPG game which looks quite interesting, you get to fight huge enemies like dragons where you can use magical powers on them, climb up them, fight them and kill them. It is physics based game and one example they gave was putting fire on water will create a wall of vapour which can shield you from the sights of the enemy. This kind of gameplay really reminds me of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom so I think I will be checking this one out. Check out the deep dive on the game here.

TLDR News

The Pokémon Company disqualifies several contest finalists as they used AI in their submissions. This is super interesting for the future of contest like theses as it is likely we will see more and more submission that use AI especially as companies put in more and more AI tools in their products. (Eurogamer)

If you watch game streamers on Twitch, YouTube or Kick then you will likely have heard of Dr Disrespect (Guy Beahm), well he has admitted to messaging a minor inappropriate messages and that was the reason for his permanent ban from Twitch. Following the release of the story, several companies have cut ties with him including the game studio Midnight Society which he co-founded and is supposed to be face of. YouTube has also de-monetised his channel. Beahm has said he will be taking an extended vacation but he would someday return. (IGN)

Apparently Elden Ring DLC is too hard so they are receiving some negative user reviews from this, I personally think that it is ridiculous that people are leaving reviews like this as they likely did not grow up in the 80s and 90s where some games were super difficult and sometimes there was no checkpoints. I remember finding games like TMNT on the NES super hard but honestly it was just a skill issue. I did like this YouTube video by MoistCr1TiKaL on the issue.

The guys are Digital Foundry have tested the PS2 Emulator on PS5 and it is not good. It has bugs, bad image quality and not a good enough selection of filtering option. Honestly for me I never owned a PS2 and would love to go play some of these games in a cheap and accessible way but the poor quality of this emulator makes me not want to do that on the PS5. (Eurogamer)

Steam launches new background gameplay record and sharing beta features. This is great for the steam deck if you want to play and capture any awesome clips of your gameplay. I would assume this take ups some usage on the CPU / GPU so probably won’t work the best with taxing games on the steam deck however this is pretty cool function for smaller indie games which is what I mostly love to play on systems like the Steam Deck. (Eurogamer)

Cool Stuff

This article by Richard Cobbett for PC gamer is a cool and interesting look at Quake and it’s history in the 3D gaming landscape when it was developed.

If you like Cyberpunk worlds then this trailer is worth checking out.

With so many lay off happening across the industry in the last year or so I wanted to highlight developer Shift Up who are the creators of Stellar Blade and are doing really well. Steller Blade sells 1 million copies, this is super awesome and worth highlighting. Super proud of the Shift Up team and hope they continue to do well in the future. (IGN)
